Ankle Strains are Only the Beginning

from:

Ankle strains occur when the muscle is over stretched. Therefore, it is important that after a strain of the muscle in the ankle, that treatment is proper and supportive. Although the initial treatment involves ice and rest of the area, more is needed after that typically to ensure that the injury is healed and that the muscle remains strong to prevent another injury in that same area. Ankle strains typically occur in athletic activities when the ankle is rolled or twisted, but they can also occur by falling or tripping, as well as car accidents and many other incidents. After most ankle injuries wearing a supportive brace is recommended to ensure the strength in the muscle is gained back. There are many different styles of ankle braces and many that are specific to certain sports and activities. Take care of ankle sprains and investigate what braces are out there for you to wear.

Most ankle braces can be worn with athletic shoes and are fairly easy to adjust to wearing. They are made from many different materials and range in price as well. Some of the most common materials are light weight fabrics, viscoelastic gel, and laminated foam. Ankle strains definitely deserve this extra care. For minor strains a knit brace may be enough. These are obviously the most inexpensive as well. For instance, there is the Prolite Knit Ankle Support which retails for about twenty five dollars. Then there are more sturdy supports that are called stirrup supports. These are two panels that go on either side of the ankle and wrap around the leg using Velcro. There are many different companies who produce these, but two of the most common are Prolite Air Stirrup Brace which retails for around fifty five dollars and the Gelfoam Ankle Stirrup Brace which is about the same price as well. These offer a little more support because they are quite stiff on the sides and will prevent rolling or twisting. Then there are supportive braces that are made from cloth that lace up the front. They offer quite a bit of support and are little more light weight. These typical braces cost about fifty or sixty dollars as well. For people who want to remain in fit condition throughout life and who are very involved in physical activity should definitely think about purchasing an ankle brace if ankle sprains or other ankle injuries have occurred. They may not be a fashion statement, but most are discrete and they really can make the healing process go more smoothly.
